Then it was known as “Independent Mutual Telephone Association of Benton and Linn Counties.” In 1918 the company was incorporated and was called Atkins Telephone Company. Atkins Telephone Company served customers in Atkins, Covington, Fairfax, Norway, Newhall, Shellsburg and Palo. Many of the long-distance calls during this time were handled by Cedar Rapids operators.
