Three Reasons To VOTE NO
1
No Specifics
Private investors refuse to tell voters any specific information about their proposal, including where the casino would be build it or who they will hire to run it. In fact, even the investors who will benefit from the casino want to remain anonymous. If this is such a good deal for Linn County, why are they rushing a vote and refusing to provide answers?
2
Wasteful Spending
The special election alone will cost taxpayers $206,000, and that is only the beginning. Tax incentives, road improvements and other and infrastructure developments necessary for a casino in downtown Cedar Rapids means even more bills will pile up. We shouldn't spend taxpayer dollars so that a group of private investors can get rich. Especially since the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is NOT likely to grant a gambling license.
3
Not Real Economic Development
Every dollar spent in the casino will be a dollar taken away from existing local businesses. Building a casino in Linn County is no substitute for real economic development. No independent studies exist to back up the economic claims of Linn County casino supporters. Iowa has enough casinos and these investors should be thinking of family friendly options that will enrich Cedar Rapids – not a quick fix casino that benefits a few wealthy investors.
