I was a union member at one point I like the ideals of union but the reality was less than ideal from my experience and how the building trades in town like to run. I have a lot of respect for working class people who build shit and get things done like these guys but union leadership just pisses me off :( http://builtbypros.com/ we do need more people who will do this type of work.
The unions back all kinds of half assed building projects the love the casino MOU was signed saying they would use union labor so... the union is always looking at making a quick buck off the area instead of the long trem value that these projects provide
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Oct. 26, 2021) – The Cedar Rapids Development Group (CRDG) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Building and Construction Trades Council outlining the intention to enter a project labor agreement once plans are developed for a local casino. The memorandum of understanding is contingent upon a successful gaming referendum – Public Measure G – on Tuesday, Nov. 2.
So the members of the union get above market pay when the project is going then they go on unemployment till the next taxpayer scam pops up.

The Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Building Trades Council works behind the scenes to create the very best environment for the construction industry. The governing board establishes policies and coordinates information among the affiliated trades unions. Their work benefits all members and the community. For example, in 2011, the CRICBT successfully negotiated a project labor agreement (PLA) with the city of Cedar Rapids for the construction of the new Convention Center. This was the first PLA in the history of Cedar Rapids and was vitally important in the effort to keep local projects being built by local people. The PLA was negated by the current governor's (Republican Governor Terry Branstad) executive order 69 which forbade PLAs on projects receiving state money. However the background work already done helped the city and the council find an exchange proposal to replace the PLA. An agreement was established to put a PLA agreement on the city's hotel renovation project which received no state funds. In addition other procedures regarding city bidding were instituted — important outcome developed as a result. While PLAs may face roadblocks from anti-labor entities, the City of Cedar Rapids recognizes the importance of the primary goal "keep local projects being built by local people" and has now implemented those other procedures to assist in reaching that goal. For example, the city requires contractors to attend pre-bid meetings and the city breaks project bids into smaller bid packages as a way to give local contractors a chance to compete effectively against larger, out of the region, competitors. The city also requires contractors to operate a drug-free workplace and certify that employees have completed certain safety training and skill training. As a result, local and area employees and contractors predominate on city projects. The CRICBT works for you — the worker, the construction client, and the contractor by ensuring that there is a construction partnership interested in the welfare of our community.
